How to Fly a Hot Air Balloon

Flying a big hot air balloon is a difficult task. Steering and navigation requires expertise, but with proper instructions you can learn to pilot a balloon. The journey can be more enjoyable when you pilots the balloon yourself. Pilots should always follow particular guidelines to ensure a safe trip.

Things You'll Need

  • Hot air balloon pilot license
  • Ground crew
  • Apparatus to determine wind pressure and temperature
  • Emergency ignitor
  • Contact device

Instructions

    • 1

Take hot air balloon piloting lessons from a certified Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) institution.

    • 2

Buy or rent a hot air balloon. Inflate with the help of an experienced ground crew. Use a piball of helium and release it in the air to determine wind direction.

    • 3

Let go of the ropes holding the balloon to the ground. Ignite the flame in the burner. Use a lighter if the balloon ignition fails. Use the levers connected to the propane gas tanks to lift the balloon up in the air. Use either liquid gas for slow speed or the gaseous form for high speed.

    • 4

Maneuver the balloon up and down and let the wind propel it. Control horizontal and vertical speed by alternating elevation from the ground and using a high blast of flame. Pull down the parachute valve to stop unnecessary escalation of the balloon.

    • 5

Use the altimeter and air temperature monitors in the balloon to obtain accurate readings. Try to follow the set course because changing winds can alter the direction.

    • 6

Keep in touch with the ground crew and update them on all developments.
