About Indian Airlines

Indian Airlines no longer exists as an independent unit. The government of India owned and operated this primarily domestic carrier from 1953 until 2007. That year the state merged Indian Airlines with its other national airline, Air India.

    • Seven independent airlines merged in 1953 to form Indian Airlines. Primarily a domestic carrier, the airline expanded to serve neighboring Asian nations.

    Merger

    • In March 2007, the government approved the merger of Indian Airlines with Air India. The newly created company retains the name Air India. Its logo is a red swan in flight.

    Controversy

    • During the years just after the merger, Air India suffered financial losses. In March 2010, a Parliamentary committee deemed the merger ill-conceived and unsuccessful.

    • As of 2010, Air India operates a fleet of 112 aircraft and is ranked among the top 30 carriers worldwide. The airline is based in Mumbai and flies both domestically and internationally.
