The location of Ronald Reagan Airport was selected by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938. The 860 acres of land were originally entirely underwater, and 20 million cubic yards of sand and gravel were moved in order to build the site as it is known now. The airport finally opened in 1941, and now has 44 gates, three runways, nearly 7,900 parking spots, and over 100 shops inside the terminal. In 2008, 18 million passengers were flown in and out of Reagan International on 13 major carriers, including American Airlines, Continental, and Delta Air. It is actually located in Virginia, but has a District of Columbia address.
