Rapids demand respect, preparation, and clear decision-making. Whether you're in a kayak, canoe, or raft, follow this safety protocol before you commit.
Get out of your boat. Walk the bank. Identify hazards: holes, strainers (submerged trees), undercut rocks, sieves, and recirculating hydraulics. Pick your line. Mark entry/exit points.
Know the International Scale of River Difficulty (Class I–VI). If the rapid exceeds your proven ability — portage. Ego causes accidents.
Every boat in a group should have one. Practice throwing and re-stuffing. It's your primary rescue tool.
Panic leads to freezing or bad decisions. Breathe. Visualize your line. Commit or walk away.
Use standard river signals (hand, whistle, paddle). Agree on lead/sweep boats. Designate a safety boater below the rapid.
Instant bracing, ferrying, or boofing may be needed. Keep your paddle ready. Don't freeze.
Pack out all trash. Avoid sensitive riparian zones. Follow Leave No Trace. Support river conservation.
If in doubt, portage. The river will be there tomorrow. Your life might not be.
