Origin of "English Channel" Name: Not from Guernsey

The name "English Channel" does not derive from Guernsey. Historical naming:

  • Mare Britannicum / Oceanus Britannicus (Roman/medieval Latin).
  • La Manche (French, "the sleeve") used since 1600s.
  • "English Channel" appears in English by late 1500s; reflects English perspective.
  • Guernsey comes from Old Norse Grǿnsey ("green island"); the island is in the Channel, not the namesake.

The strait separates southern England from northern France; its name evolved from English maritime usage.
