How to Replace an Existing Marine Stereo With a New One

Boating can be one of the most enjoyable activities in the summer. If you are a music buff as well, listening to your favorite tunes as you jet around a lake or drop anchor to swim enhances the pleasure of boating. These days, most boats already come with a radio as standard equipment, but if you want to replace your factory-installed marine radio with one more to your taste, it's as easy as fishing in a bucket.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Wire connector plug adapter
  • Plastic wire connectors
  • Cinching wrench
  • Wire strippers
  • Face kit (if needed)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the console panel around the existing radio by unscrewing it and lifting gently, pulling it off. Set it aside in a safe place for reattachment later.

    • 2

Pull the old radio out of the opening and unhook the plastic wire connector box. Make sure all the wires are still securely connected to the adapter.

    • 3

Matching wire colors (located in the back of the unit) on your new marine stereo, attach to wires from the unit to the adapter plug by inserting the wire from the unit and the wire from the adapter into a plastic wire connector. Use the cinching wrench to seal each side of the connector, making sure the wires are secure. You may have some wires that do not have mates on the adapter left over, but that is normal.

    • 4

Once all the wires from your new unit are connected to the adapter, plug the adapter into the existing socket inside the console where the old radio was hooked up. Set the radio into the bracket inside of the console and tighten.

    • 5

Attach the faceplate (if needed) around the new radio face and secure with screws. Replace the console panel, making sure the new radio is set snug into the opening. Reattach the console panel using the existing screws and a screwdriver. Power on the new radio to ensure the installation was a success.
