Oregon Recreational Boat Noise Limit: 90 dB at 50 Feet
Oregon law (ORS 830.235, OAR 250-010-0030) sets the maximum allowable sound level for recreational vessel exhaust at 90 decibels (dB) measured at 50 feet (15 meters) from the source.
Scope
- Applies to all motorized watercraft: powerboats, PWCs (jet skis), sailboats under power
- All Oregon waters: inland, coastal, Columbia River
- Enforced by: Marine Board, county sheriffs, State Police
Testing Protocol
- Stationary test: Engine at 3,000 RPM (or ¾ throttle) in neutral
- Meter: Type 2 sound level meter, A-weighting, fast response
- Conditions: Calm water, no wind, 50 ft abeam
Compliance
- Factory mufflers usually compliant
- Aftermarket "performance" exhausts often violate
- Modifications void compliance
- Fine: Up to $500 (Class D violation); possible impound
Why It Matters
- Noise pollution: wildlife disturbance, shoreline residents, other boaters
- Safety: masking horn, voice, distress signals
- Access: noise complaints drive ramp closures, restrictions
Keep stock muffler; maintain it. Respect the 90 dB limit—it's the law and good stewardship.
