The Tanaka 1.2 horsepower outboard boat motor was manufactured by Tanaka Power Equipment, a subsidiary of the Japanese company, Hitachi Power Tools Group. The motor was discontinued because it did not meet EPA standards in America.

    • Tanaka's 1.2 HP outboard motor was sold under a variety of names. Along with Tanaka branding, the motor was also re-branded and sold by Sears as the 58513 and 58613, and by Aquabug as the AOB-120.

    Features

    • Meant primarily for canoes or dinghies, the 1.2 HP Tanaka weighs only 14 pounds. It is built around a 22 cc air-cooled, direct-drive engine without a centrifugal clutch. It is paired with a small two-blade propeller.

    Function

    • The motor is started via a manual pull start cable attached to a coil and recoil assembly. Throttle is controlled via a manual throttle handle. The motor generally is intended to be stern-mounted. It is of the two-stroke design, powered by regular gasoline mixed with two-stroke oil.
