Outboard Instruments

On a boat, "outboard" qualifies an engine or instrument that is not directly built into the vessel. More generally, it refers to anything away from the mid-line of a vessel, even the placement of a sail. Many smaller boats are equipped with an outboard motor, as well as instruments added to enhance safety or navigation.
  1. Nissan Outboard Motor

    • Nissan Marine sells a NSF8A3 outboard motor that is a two-cylinder, four-stroke engine. Its maximum operating range is 5,000 to 6,000 rpm, with a bore and stroke of 2.17 by 1.73 inches. The smaller variety of the engine is a relatively small 81.5 pounds, against the largest, at 109 pounds. An outboard motor is an internal-combustion operation that attaches to the stern.

A four-stroke outboard motor tends to be more quiet and smooth than a two-stroke, with good fuel economy. The four-stroke engine is also accepted at any body of water, and is reliable. If something does break, however, they're often expensive to fix.

The motor also ranges between 8 and 9.8 horsepower, is water-cooling and starts with a Flywheel Magneto CD ignition.

    Motor Trachometer

    • Faria Marine Instruments sells an outboard motor tachometer and tachometer/hourmeter combination. The tachometer measures the revolutions per minute (rpm) of the outboard motor, and displays the result on a dial.

Faria makes tachometers that are compatible with Chrysler, Force, Honda, Mercury Mariner, Evinrude Johnson, Suzuki, Tohatsu Nissan and Yamaha. The tracometer comes with standard case wire connections, and some assembly required to attach it to the motor's ignition terminal. )

    Depth Gauge

    • Faria sells an outboard depth gauge for boaters, with a 2-inch LCD display that shows temperature and depth. The instrument can be set to display the air or water temperature with simple button-pushes.

The gauge features new-technology microprocessors and software, giving the depth-sounder high speed and accuracy, despite bottom conditions. The instrument can sound a depth up to 199 feet, with automatic gain control, keel offset, deep or shallow water alarms, and backlighting for night vision. The display is oversized and easy to read, and is available with a transom, in-hull or through-hull transducer.
