Why is it important for sediment to build up around the ice blocks in order kettle lakes form?

Sediment does not accumulate around ice blocks for them to turn into kettle lakes. Kettle lakes are formed when large blocks of ice break from the glacier and become buried in sediment. As the glacier melts away, the ice block melts, leaving a circular depression in the landscape that ultimately becomes filled by water.
