Three Vital Roles of Estuaries
Estuaries are highly productive ecosystems with crucial environmental roles:
- Nursery and Feeding Grounds: Sheltered, nutrient-rich waters provide ideal environment for young marine life (fish, shellfish, crustaceans) to grow and find food. Many marine species depend on estuaries during early life stages.
- Filtration and Nutrient Cycling: Act as natural filters, removing pollutants and sediments from freshwater before it reaches the ocean. Freshwater-saltwater mixing slows flow, allowing particles to settle. Also transform organic matter into forms usable by marine organisms.
- Habitat and Biodiversity: Support diverse habitats (salt marshes, mudflats, mangrove forests) hosting unique plant/animal communities. Provide shelter, breeding, feeding areas for numerous species, including migratory birds and threatened/endangered species.
