New York City Bus Information

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) runs the public bus system in New York City. According to the MTA, the New York City (NYC) bus service owns the most buses of any public transportation system in North America.

    Coverage

    • The NYC bus service runs 24 hours per day and covers all five neighborhoods in the city.

    Cost

    • As of October 2009, the cost to ride the NYC bus is $2.25 per person, payable in exact change or MetroCard only. No paper bills are allowed. Seniors and people with disabilities are eligible to receive a discounted fare.

    Bus Stops

    • Bus stops are indicated at street corners with a tall, blue sign that features the bus logo and route number. Riders can request to be let off the bus at any location deemed to be safe by the driver between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

    Connections

    • Bus riders are eligible to transfer to a connecting bus or the subway free of charge within 2 hours of paying the original fare.

    Fun Fact

    • Between 2005 and 2007, the MTA purchased 284 environmentally friendly buses that feature hybrid electric engines.
