In 2009, New York City had 209 local and 36 express bus routes. According to the Metropolitan Transit Authority's website, local route buses indicate their major borough of operation with one or two letters, which are B for Brooklyn, Bx for the Bronx, M for Manhattan, Q for Queens and S for Staten Island. Buses serving express routes are marked with the letter X.
Taxis in New York City set their rates upon entry at $2.50. Each unit of travel, measured at one-fifth of a mile, costs 40 cents. Surcharges apply between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m, as well as between 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays. According to the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, taxis that are stopped in traffic or traveling less then 6 miles per hour charge 40 cents per 60 seconds of waiting time.
