New York City features many skyscrapers, a variety of cultures and more stores than you can count. However, for someone who doesn't enjoy large crowds, expensive shopping and hotels, lots of noise and the fear of danger, New York City may not hold the same appeal. While you can find may reasons to visit New York City, it's possible to weigh the reasons not to travel to New York City.
  1. Crowds

    • According to the 2009 Census Bureau Estimates, New York City is home to approximately 8,391,881 people. The number increases when accounting for tourists and business travelers. Such a large population causes crowded sidewalks and traffic-filled streets. Also, if you go during a holiday or on a weekend, you may find that attractions such as the Statue of Liberty have a long line to wait. Spending your time in such large crowds may deter you from traveling to New York City.

    Expenses

    • New York City ranks among the most expensive places to live in the country. This makes traveling in New York City expensive as well. Aside from high-priced hotel rooms, everyday items like food have higher prices than many areas in the country. If you do not have much money to spend, traveling to New York City may prove difficult. Also keep in mind that hotel rates increase during holidays and weekends.

    Noise

    • Commonly referred to as "The City That Never Sleeps," New York City roars with noise throughout all hours of the day and night. While a night owl may bask in the city's insomnia, trying to get a quiet night's rest during vacation may be difficult. Also, during the day the street is filled with people, cars and buses to the point that the daytime racket may become overbearing as well. If you cannot stand noise, New York City may not be the place for you.

    Danger

    • Every city has certain areas of town that harbor more crime and danger than others. However, in such a large city pickpockets and minor theft may abound almost anywhere. If you travel to New York City anyway, keep a close eye on all your belongings, and try to blend in as much as possible. Leave the palm tree shirt at home so you do not become an easy target. Also, avoid going out alone at night.
