The New York Theater District runs through the heart of Times Square, going north from 42nd Street to 57th Street, and west from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue.
New York City's Theater District has existed since the early 1900s and was originally located near Union Square and Madison Square Garden. Due to rising real estate prices, Broadway theaters eventually moved uptown, establishing the current Theater District near Times Square.
The top three longest running Broadway shows are "The Phantom of the Opera," "Cats" and "Les Miserables." "The Phantom of the Opera" is the only show out of the three still running today.
Besides seeing a Broadway musical, visitors wishing to explore the theater district after hours can enjoy cocktails with friends at Sardi's, laugh at a comedy show at Caroline's on Broadway or see a live band perform at B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill.
For discounts to the most popular Broadway shows, purchase tickets up to 50 percent off at the TKTS booth, located at Duff Square between 46th Street and 47th Street. Also, to see musicals at some of the area's oldest theaters, such as the Booth, Plymouth and Schubert Theater, head west along 45th Street.
