The Greyhound bus line offers five departures a day from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Each passenger can check one piece of baggage for free and one additional bag for $10. Each passenger is also allowed to bring one small bag under 25 pounds on the bus. Greyhound makes special accommodations for disabled travelers, and personal-care assistants can receive a 50% discount on fares. As of December 2010, three-day advance-purchase tickets were available online starting at $39 a person for weekend departures.
The estimated travel time is up to seven hours. The trip is 277 miles. Evening departures have an estimated time of six hours and 15 minutes. Afternoon departures, during commuter traffic hours, increase the time to six hours and 55 minutes. Washington is the fifth stop on the schedule.
Greyhound buses have tinted windows, on-board restrooms, air conditioning and reclining seats with headrests. Radios, portable televisions or DVD devices, and laptops are allowed with headphones so other passengers aren't disturbed. Smoking isn't allowed on the bus, and only service animals can travel with passengers. Because the length of the trip exceeds five hours, children 14 years old and younger must travel with another passenger who is at least 15 years of age, according to the rules on Greyhound's web site.
