Royal Caribbean Shopping Guide

Cruises are all-inclusive vacations, but that does not mean you can leave your wallet at home. Shopping opportunities are plentiful on board Royal Caribbean's ships. Anything that you buy on the ship is duty-free, which means you don't pay the import tax that is included on imported items when you shop at home. Royal Caribbean ships have a shopping level where you find jewelry, clothing, liquor, cosmetics and souvenirs.

Find out what's available. Royal Caribbean's "Shops on Board" vary by class of ship, and certain items, like Omega watches, are sold only on some ships. Hours vary, though the shops are usually open late at night. Check the on-board information during your cruise to plan your shopping trip.

Do your homework. Watches and jewelry entice on Royal Caribbean ships, but come prepared with a price from home to know when you have found a good deal. Be careful not to fall into the vacation trap of being in a good mood and overspending.

Consider your lifestyle. You may find a tropical shirt or flowing caftan that looks great poolside, but don't buy it if you won't wear it after the cruise. On the other hand, the shops often have a finely edited selection of bathing suits, so if there is one that fits and is becoming, do not pass it up.

Bring home the bubbly. Once you are out in international waters (which occurs on any overnight cruise) you can buy duty-free alcohol. This can be a very good deal. Check prices at a liquor store before your cruise, and avoid buying anything that you don't actually drink. Also check the duty-free allotment per adult. If you exceed this amount, usually 1 or 2 liters, you have to pay extra, negating any savings. If you want to purchase duty-free perfume or cosmetics, remember to check prices first and stick to your preferred products.

Know your budget. A sweatshirt with the Royal Caribbean logo, Cuban cigars, and beach towels are among the less expensive souvenir options. However, if you are interested in art, Royal Caribbean ships often have art auctions, where you can spend a huge sum of money.
