What was the mission of English ships and sent to Suriname in 1675?

In 1675, the English sent a fleet of ships to Suriname with the mission to capture the Dutch colony there. The fleet, led by Captain John Berry, successfully took control of the colony and renamed it New Amsterdam. The English occupation lasted until 1682 when the Dutch retook the colony.
