The Best Cruises for College Kids

Perhaps you've been to Cancun one too many times on spring break, or you're looking for a vacation that requires less planning and more relaxing. If so, a cruise may be the best way to take a break from the books -- or delve into them. Whether you're looking for a relaxing way to spend the summer or an immersive semester on the seas, there's a cruise waiting for you.
  1. easyCruise

    • This cruise, run by the same company as the easyJet airline, offers longer porting (typically 24 hours) at each destination with long weekend and short break cruise packages. Some offshore, guided tours are available, but easyCruise is all about giving passengers their independence, a factor that might appeal to many students. The ship isn't decadent, but designed in eye-catching oranges, black and white. Amenities include a spa, sauna, wellness zone, bars and a nightclub. In 2010, the cruises traveled the Aegean and Ionian Seas and docked at ports in Greece and Turkey. These itineraries change each year, however.

    Scholar Ship

    • Perhaps you're not the type to party hard and let all your responsibilities go to the wayside. If so, the Scholar Ship may be for you. Students register for an entire 16-week semester on the cruise ship, which travels to the locations students learn about. 600 undergrads and postgrads from 35 countries participate. Staff includes 120 multi-national faculty and 416 crew members. The ship ports at destinations for five days at a time, allowing students to take part in week-long field studies run by local business, academic and community organizations. Community service projects are also organized, and students get time for independent travel and sightseeing. The ship itself houses students in double occupancy rooms with private bathrooms. It has a fitness center and clinic. As of 2010, the semester costs around $25,000, but $2 million in scholarships are awarded each year to students with demonstrated economic need.
