What does the star on flag represent?

Each star on the flag of the United States represents one of the fifty states in the union. The first flag, adopted in 1777, had thirteen stars, representing the thirteen original colonies. As new states were added to the union, stars were added to the flag, with the most recent addition being the 50th star, representing Hawaii, which became a state in 1959.
