The biggest plane crash in Japan was Japan Air Lines Flight 123, which occurred on August 12, 1985. The Boeing 747SR, operated by Japan Air Lines (JAL), suffered a catastrophic failure of the rear pressure bulkhead while in flight, causing the loss of the vertical stabilizer and much of the empennage. The aircraft subsequently became uncontrollable and crashed into Mount Takamagahara in Ueno, Gunma Prefecture, killing 520 of the 524 passengers and crew on board. It is the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history, and the deadliest aviation disaster in Japanese history.
