  1. How to Buy a Metrocard

    • 1

You can buy a Metrocard with cash at the attendant's window, but sometimes the lines are long and the attendant does not have change. Frequently, the attendant will not be in their booth at all. It is more reliable to use one of the Metrocard vending machines located in every station. You can use cash, debit or credit card in these vending machines.

    • 2

The smaller vending machines, usually towards the left side, take credit and debit cards only. The lines are usually shorter for these machines. Both machines work exactly the same, except there is no "Cash" option on the machines on the left.

    • 3

When it's your turn to use the machine, you will be asked what type of Metrocard you would like. Your choices are: Single Ride, Unlimited or a Regular Metrocard. The Single Ride card can only be used once and cannot be refilled. Both the Unlimited and Regular can be refilled at the vending machines at a later time.

    • 4

The Unlimited Card allows you to ride the subway any number of times for a fixed price. The duration of Unlimited Cards is 7 days, two weeks and monthly. Each duration will be a different price and the card will expire exactly 7 days, two weeks, or a month after you purchase the card. For vacationers who will be using the subway frequently, the 7-Day Unlimited is the best choice.

    • 5

The Regular Metrocard is good for a traveler who plans to use the subway for a few specific locations. You can put any amount of money on the card you would like. If you purchase one of the selected amounts on the screen, the machine will usually give you a bonus of an extra ride. If you wish to choose "Other Amounts," you can enter in any amount you like, but may not necessarily receive a Free Ride Bonus.

    • 6

Once you have made your purchase, the machine will ask you to dip your credit/debit card or feed your cash into the machine. The Metrocard vending machine accepts both bills and coins. If you choose to use a credit/debit card, the machine may ask you to enter your zip code.

That's it. Take your Metrocard and always be sure to get a receipt. Now you can swipe your new Metrocard to enter the subway.
