Online, go to a website that provides subway route and timetables, such as Hop Stop, Google maps or the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) website.
Type your starting point into the first space. This space is labeled "Starting Address" on Hop Stop, "From" on the MTA's website or "A" on Google maps.
Enter your destination in the second space. The category is labeled "Destination Address" on Hop Stop, "To" on the MTA webpage or "B" on Google maps.
Add other information regarding your trip. For instance, if you will be leaving at a certain time, add the time. This will allow the search to pull up train arrivals that will suit your schedule.
Press "Get Directions" on both Hop Stop and Google maps or "Submit" on the MTA's trip planner. The websites will present a number of routes for you to choose from. Each route and its description will include calculations regarding the trip's duration. Select a route that seems best for you. For example, many people pick the fastest route. Other times, a route with the fewest number of transfers may be easier for those wary of navigating the subway system.
Consult a subway map. Before getting on the subway, it is best to confirm the routes of travel by looking at a subway map. Be sure that the trains you plan to take stop near your destination. You may also note alternative routes.
Speak with an MTA staff member. Many subway stations have staff members in booths who can address any questions you may have.
