How to Take CTA Public Transportation to U.S. Cellular Field

Chicago fans make the trek to the South Side to enjoy White Sox baseball, sold-out concerts and trade shows at U.S. Cellular Field, also known as The Cell. U.S. Cellular Field is located immediately off the Intererstate 90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway, which Inrix, a traffic analytics company, lists as the second worst bottleneck in America (second to New York's I-95 Cross Bronx Expressway). Dan Ryan congestion is especially problematic during U.S. Cellular Field events. Take Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) public transportation into the area, to save time and money.

  Identify the nearest CTA train in relation to your current location. CTA stations are within walking distance from all points in the downtown Loop. On the North Side, you can pick up CTA elevated, or El, trains at Lincoln Avenue, Milwaukee Avenue, the I-90/94 Kennedy Expressway, and within two miles of the lakefront. On the West Side, CTA train service parallels the I-290 Eisenhower Expressway, Lake Street and Cermak Road. Lastly, South Siders can take the el from Archer Avenue, King Drive and the I-90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway.

  Locate U.S. Cellular Field on the CTA map. White Sox fans and concertgoers can take the CTA Red Line to Sox / 35th for U.S. Cellular Field. The CTA Red Line runs through the I-90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway on the South Side. On the North Side, the Red Line generally follows Sheridan Road, Broadway Avenue and Sheffield Avenue. In the Loop, you can pick up the Red Line subway beneath State Street.

  Identify important transfer points for the Red Line within the city. In the South Loop, the Red, Orange and Green lines meet at Roosevelt. On the North Side, you can transfer between the Red, Purple and Brown Lines at Fullerton. Furthermore, all CTA train lines meet at some point within the Loop.

  Enter your closest CTA train station and purchase a fare card. As of 2010, a one-way fare card costs $2.25. You will need the exact amount, because CTA machines do not make change. Read signs at the CTA station and platform to get a sense of direction before boarding your train. CTA trains going downtown generally say "Loop." All trains feature an overhead banner that shows the last stop on the line.

  Transfer onto the Red Line, if necessary. All transfer points for the Red Line are north of U.S. Cellular Field. CTA Red Line trains heading south towards U.S. Cellular Field will post "95/Dan Ryan" overhead.

  Exit the CTA Red Line at Sox--35th. From here, you will walk west and over the Dan Ryan Expressway into U.S. Cellular Field. During events, you can simply follow the crowd into the ballpark.
