How to Replace the Seals in Your Camper's 12-Volt Water Pump

Replacing the seals or gaskets in your camper's 12-volt water pump is a project that can be completed in an afternoon. All manufacturers of 12-volt water pumps sell repair kits. Purchasing a repair kit will ensure that you have the correct seals and gaskets for your particular model. The repair kit will contain a drive belt, gaskets or seals, a new diaphragm and a pump-check valve.

  • Flat screwdriver
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Socket set
  • Adjustable wrench

Instructions

    • 1

      Empty the freshwater tank and the hot water tank prior to starting the repair. Disconnect the battery supply to the camper.

      Open the access panel to reveal the water pump. Locate the electrical connections to the pump. Remove the electrical connections. Mark the location of the connections by writing on masking tape and labeling the wires.

      Disconnect the inlet and outlet water lines from the pump with a wrench. Mark the inlet and outlet lines with tape.

      Remove the pump-housing bolts and vibration pads from where they attach to the camper. Remove the entire pump assembly from the camper.

      Remove the screws that hold the diaphragm in place and remove the diaphragm.

      Open the pump assembly and locate the gaskets and seals. Remove the necessary parts in order to reach the seals. Replace the worn-out seals with the new ones from the repair kit.

      Reassemble the pump assembly and housing. Replace the pump diaphragm.

      Attach the pump assembly and vibration pads to the camper. Reattach the water inlet and outlet connections. Reattach the wires. Refill water tanks, connect the camper battery and check that the water pump functions correctly.
