Compared to other towed trailers, the fifth wheel has a better center of gravity due to its attachment in the truck bed. This also reduces swaying, which can make both the truck and trailer unstable.
One major drawback is that a large truck is necessary for hauling. Fifth wheels have to be attached to a truck bed, and since they are usually heavy trailers, most light duty trucks will not suffice. Heavy duty trucks are usually suggested for hauling.
Fifth wheels are useful in that they can be detached from the truck once at a destination, leaving the truck free to roam the area without having the bulk of the trailer attached.
