Pros & Cons of a Fifth Wheel Trailer

Fifth wheel campers are towable recreational vehicles. What makes them unique is that they are not attached to a hitch positioned on the rear of a vehicle, but are attached within a truck bed.
  1. Benefits

    • Compared to other towed trailers, the fifth wheel has a better center of gravity due to its attachment in the truck bed. This also reduces swaying, which can make both the truck and trailer unstable.

    Disadvantages

    • One major drawback is that a large truck is necessary for hauling. Fifth wheels have to be attached to a truck bed, and since they are usually heavy trailers, most light duty trucks will not suffice. Heavy duty trucks are usually suggested for hauling.

    Considerations

    • Fifth wheels are useful in that they can be detached from the truck once at a destination, leaving the truck free to roam the area without having the bulk of the trailer attached.
