A fifth wheel trailer is a towed trailer attached inside the bed of a truck. This connection point allows the entire vehicle -- towing car to the trailer -- to be more stable during travel, lessening the likelihood of the trailer swaying from side to side.
A fifth wheel trailer tends to be more expensive than a typical travel trailer because of its extra space. The part of the trailer that hangs over the truck for attachment allows for more storage and floor space inside. In fact, there is even more head room for easier maneuvering inside the trailer.
Adding to the increased cost, the fifth wheel trailer also boasts a simpler-to-use hitch mechanism called a pin and jaw hitch. In contrast to a typical ball and coupler hitch, the fifth wheel trailer can be hitched and unhitched by just one person.
