Under the federal Truth in Lending Act (TILA), you have the right to receive a written notice from the creditor within 30 days after the sale of your vehicle. This notice must include the following information:
* The date of the sale
* The name and address of the purchaser
* The amount the vehicle was sold for
* Any charges that were deducted from the sale proceeds
* The amount of any surplus funds that you may be entitled to receive
If you do not receive this notice, you can send a written request to the creditor for the information required under the law. The creditor must provide you with this information within 15 days of receiving your request.
In addition to the information required under TILA, some states may have additional requirements regarding the sale of repossessed vehicles. For example, some states may require the creditor to obtain a court order before repossessing your vehicle or to provide you with a certain amount of notice before the sale. You can contact your state's attorney general's office for more information about your rights.
