How to Refinish Camper Trailer Cushions

The cushions in your camper trailer can suffer great wear and tear --- especially if you travel with kids and pets. Seams can start to separate. Zippers will fail over time. Stains and faded fabric make the trailer look old and outdated. Refinishing the cushions is a fast and inexpensive way to update the look of your camper or increase its resale value. Choose a fabric like denim, canvas or duck cloth for durability. Leather is expensive, but it adds an upscale designer look to the completed project.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the cushions that require refinishing. Take three measurements: length, width and height. If the cushions are not rectangular; measure across the longest part of the cushion. Add 1 inch to all measurements as a seam allowance.

    • 2

Select the type of fabric you will use to refinish the camper trailer cushions. Stripes, patterns and fabric with a nap or texture require up to 10 percent more fabric than solid colors. The extra fabric is needed to match up the pattern.

    • 3

Measure the amount of fabric required. Upholstery fabric is sold in 60 inch widths. For cushions that are less than 60 inches wide, add the length for each piece to determine the total length required. There are six pieces to each rectangular cushion --- a top, a bottom, and four side pieces.

For example, if your cushion measures 40 inches by 40 inches by 4 inches, you add 1 inch to each measurement giving you 41 by 41 by 5. Add 41 plus 41 plus 20 (four, 5 inch side pieces), which gives you 102 inches. Divide this by 36 to convert the measurement to yards. This cushion requires 2.83 yards.

If your cushions are larger than 60 inches wide, double the above measurements because you will need to piece the fabric.

    • 4

Trace the shape of oddly shaped cushions on to a piece of newspaper. Mark the right and wrong side of each shape. This will be your pattern piece. Use this pattern to transfer the shape onto the fabric.

    • 5

Cut the fabric pieces and assemble the cushions. Cut the side piece that will be in the back of the cushion in half lengthwise. Pin hook and loop tape to each half. Pin the sides pieces without the hook and loop tape with right sides facing and sew the short sides together to create three corner seams.

    • 6

Pin the top piece of fabric to the side piece with right sides facing. Line up the corners and pin in place. Sew the pieces together.

    • 7

Pin the top part of the side with the hook and loop tape to the top of the cushion cover. Make sure the right sides are facing each other and sew in place. Do not sew the back piece to the side pieces.

    • 8

Pin the bottom piece to the bottom side piece containing the hook and loop tape. Make sure the right sides are facing. Sew in place. Pin the bottom piece to the side pieces leaving the hook and loop tape open. Turn the cushion cover right-side out.

    • 9

Remove the old cushion cover and replace it with the new cover.
