Remove the cotter pin on the tension assembly by grabbing it with the vice grips. The cotter pin is the metal fastener holding the fabric to the awning rod. This piece resembles a hair pin.
Place assistant on the side of the awning with the cotter pin so they can reinstall the pin when needed.
Grasp the end piece of the torsion assembly with the vice grips. The torsion assembly is located at the end of the rod and is used to wind and unwind the fabric. It has a rectangular base with an extension that goes into the rod.
Wind the spring by the number of turns indicated in your owner's manual. The direction to turn is shown on the end cap. If you do not have your manual watch the fabric as you turn. You want the fabric to have a little movement to it so it is not too tight.
Replace the cotter pin with the help of your friend or family member. Have them reinstall the pin as you hold the end with the vice grips.
