Determine a location in the camper for the use and storage of the toilet. A private location is best for using the toilet, but the only solution in tent campers may be to hang a curtain across one end of the space.
Designate a cabinet where the toilet can be stowed so it won't move during travel. Add a strong latch to the cabinet if necessary. The cabinet might also hold toilet paper and hand sanitizer as well as the sealed containers of toilet chemicals.
Pull the top unit off the lower unit of the portable toilet. The lower or bottom part of the toilet is the holding tank, where urine and feces will accumulate.
Open the tank valve. A lever usually is located on the front of the tank. Follow the manufacturer's directions for adding the deodorant chemicals to the holding tank. Close the valve.
Replace the top unit onto the bottom unit, according to directions, by pushing or twisting. Check that the two units are securely locked together.
Open the freshwater inlet on the top tank. Fill the inlet with water up to the mark indicated in or on the tank. Close the inlet.
Install a battery in the compartment indicated in the manufacturer's directions if the unit is to flush electrically. In non-electric units, the flush is operated manually.
