Ventilate the RV before doing any troubleshooting. The propane sensor can be falsely triggered by other gases or cleaning solvents. Remove any leaking containers or pressurized cans in the RV before doing any further work on the sensor.
Check the voltage on your RV battery with a voltmeter. The propane detector uses the RV battery for power and low voltage can cause false alarms.
Turn on the propane at the storage tanks. Make a dish soap and water solution and spray or drip this solution on all joints in your propane supply lines. These lines run from the propane storage tanks under the RV and into the kitchen, furnace and refrigerator areas on most RVs. Use wrenches to gently tighten any fittings where you see bubbles.
Carefully dust the propane sensor with a soft brush or a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Dust can cause false alarms. Inspect the detector for a "replace by" date. Some detectors have a working life and require periodic replacement.
Check each appliance that uses propane to ensure they are lighting when activated. This step should be done only after verifying you have no leaks in the propane lines. You may have a furnace, refrigerator and water heater that run on propane. Look for a propane flame at the inspection port of each appliance. If you hear a steady clicking without a flame present have the unit serviced.
If you cannot find any leaks with the above steps and the alarms continue, seek professional assistance. You do not want to ignore a potential propane leak.
