How to Dispose of Propane Bottles When Camping

Some camping appliances, such as stoves and lanterns, use small propane bottles as a source of fuel. These small bottles are safe for use with these appliances and for transportation as long as the bottles are properly capped. Disposing of these bottles can be easy, but you must check the regulations for the campground in which you are staying.

Instructions

    • 1

Hook the propane bottle up to a camp stove, latern or other propane-powered device.

    • 2

Light the device and turn it on high. Run the device until the flame extinguishes itself fully. This process ensures that the propane bottle is completely empty.

    • 3

Remove the propane tank from your device and replace its cap.

    • 4

Throw the propane bottles away in the campground trash bin or another outdoor garbage can. If the campground in which you are staying does not allow for disposal of propane bottles, ask for a nearby location where you can dispose of them.
