How to Freshen Up on a Camping Trip

When most people say they don’t like camping, what they really mean is they don’t like feeling dirty. Fortunately, the two need not go hand in hand. Here’s how to freshen up on a camping trip and no sink or shower required.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your face and body with wet wipes. Since most wet wipes are bleached with chlorine and contain alcohol, fragrance and synthetic chemicals, look for the natural kind. Try a health food store or search for “natural wet wipes” online. Just be sure they make it into the trash can and not on the ground.

    • 2

Wash your hair in a bucket of water. Dunk your head in the bucket to submerge your hair, lather up with shampoo then re-dunk your head in the water. Use a natural, biodegradable shampoo (and conditioner) so that you’re not filling the ground with chemicals when you pour the water out. Find a bush or tree to water rather than just pouring the water on rocks, pavement or concrete.

    • 3

Apply a moisturizing lotion liberally all over your body. In climates both hot and cold, lotion can help protect the skin from drying and cracking. Protect against the sun with an SPF formula--15 is fine but 30 is ideal.

    • 4

Fill a spray bottle with water. A mist to the face, neck and chest is a great way to get a cool, refreshing pick-me-up on a hot day. You may want to add a couple of drops of lavender or eucalyptus essential oils for aromatherapy benefits.

    • 5

Hand-wash your clothes in the same bucket you use to wash your hair. Liquid dish soap works well. Again, be sure it’s biodegradable so you can use it to responsibly water the surrounding plants when you’re done.

    • 6

Take along some mouthwash. Though you should certainly take the time to brush your teeth in a bowl of water every morning and night, it’s much quicker and easier to rinse, gargle and spit when you need to freshen up your breath throughout the day.

    • 7

Pack some eye drops, as wind, water and sun exposure can be drying and irritating.

    • 8

Make sure you have more than enough clean drinking water to last throughout your camping trip. The best way to feel clean and refreshed is when you are properly hydrated.
