How to Troubleshoot a Camper Slide Out

Three types of slide out systems are available for RVs: 12-volt DC electric motor driven systems, high pressure hydraulic systems and hybrid systems, which are any combination of electric, hydraulic and manual systems. Within each system type there are numerous manufacturers, each having a specific mechanical set-up. Detailed diagnosis and troubleshooting is manufacturer specific. You can use basic troubleshooting across systems to localize problems.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Check the camper to be sure it is level. If the camper is not level, the slide out may not open properly or it may open partially and stop. Level the camper and check to see if the slide out operates properly.

    • 2

Check for obstructions. Check the exterior of the camper and make sure nothing is blocking or impeding the path of the slide out. Remove any obstructions and try to open the slide out.

    • 3

Examine the slide out rails and mechanisms for dirt, debris and blockage. Use a wire brush to remove road dirt or debris from the operating mechanisms. Open the slide out.

    • 4

Determine if there is a low-voltage situation. If your battery is low, the slide out will not operate properly. Fully charge the battery and attempt to operate the slide out.

    • 5

Look for leakage of hydraulic fluid on a hydraulic or hybrid system. If there is evidence of leakage, add fluid to the cylinders, close the slide out and bring it to an RV repair center for repair.

    • 6

Verify that the locks on the slide out room are disengaged. The unit will not open if the locks are engaged. If your system has a manual override option, make sure that this is not engaged when attempting to open the slide out with an automatic system.

    • 7

Listen for the sound of the motor operating on an electric or hybrid system. If the motor does not run, check the electrical connections at the motor, the operating switch and at the battery. Examine the fuse box to make sure that the fuse to the slide out does not require replacement.

    • 8

Use the manual override, if your system has one, to open or close a slide out that stops part way. Once the slide out is completely opened or closed examine the operating mechanism to determine the cause of the problem. The most common cause for this is a blockage or low voltage.
