How to Fix a Leak on Camper Slide Out

A slide outs adds extra feet to living areas in a camper. However, a harsh storm or excessive traveling can take its toll on a camper's slide out. Although the units is generally sturdy, leaks can occur at any time. Leaks can cause great discomfort on a trip and can cause costly damage to the interior of your camper. Leaks are easy to fix if you are handy and should be done as soon as possible to avoid further complications.

  • Silicone-based sealant
  • Plastic scraper
  • Weather stripping
  • Rag
  • Mild soap and water

      Locate the leak by carefully expecting the entire seals on the RV. If the leak is on the roof, climb carefully on top the camper or use a ladder to get as close to the slide out as possible. Do not stand on the actual slide out roof.

      Remove all old caulking by digging up with a plastic scraper. If any remains on the roof or side, scrape off carefully with the scraper as well.

      Clean the area using a mild soap and water mixture.

      Apply the new sealant using a caulking gun. Caulk all seals along the camper's edges and along the roof. Flatten the new sealant and let it dry for 24 hours.

      Remove the old weather stripping if the leak is coming through the sides of the slide out and replace.
