How to Fix Water Damage in a Camper

Recreational vehicles, or RVs, usually have different water storage tanks installed for use during a trip. Water can sometimes leak from these tanks or other parts of the water system and cause damage to the interior of the vehicle in the form of water rot or mold growth. Repair water damage to the floor by replacing the affected area with new material. Replace your water-logged carpet or subfloor when they are damaged beyond repair. Sand and repaint any areas of rust caused by the water damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull back the carpeting and determine the extent of the floor area damaged. Cut out the carpet carefully along the edges of cabinets and walls if it cannot be salvaged and use this piece as a template for cutting your new carpet.

    • 2

Look for the water-induced warping on the subfloors. Remove all of the damaged panels using the pry bar, hammer, saws or drill as required.

    • 3

Replace these panels as needed by cutting them to size if required. Attach them to the RV's framing in the same manner the old subfloor panels were attached, making sure the edges of the panels are supported by the framing beams. Flush mount or countersink the hardware to the new panels with deck screws or bolts used for the damaged panels.

    • 4

Replace the damaged carpet with the new piece cut using the old piece as a template. Attach in the same manner the old carpet was attached to the floor, usually by stapling it to the floor or using trim pieces along the edges of the cabinets and walls. Stretch it out before cutting the new carpet to size.
