How to Install Truck Sleepers

Adding a sleeper to the back of a pickup truck gives you the ability to camp and use the truck bed to sleep and rest. Kits are available for most pickup truck beds, including mid- and full-size pickups. Installing these beds consists of assembling the sleeper according to the kit's instructions, sliding it into the pickup truck bed and attaching to the sides for security.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the tarp out on a flat surface next to the pickup truck. Lay out the sleeper kit pieces and assemble the sleeper frame.

    • 2

Assign a helper to stand on one side of the frame and then lift it up and into the back of the pickup truck bed. Be sure to position the sleeper, so it is above the rear wheel wells.

    • 3

Bolt the frame into position with C-clamps, typically included with the sleeper kit. Attach the C-clamps to the truck bed walls along the rim where there is a pronounced lip. Place the side of the frame into the clamp as well; then tighten the clamps down, so the sleeper is secured into position.

    • 4

Slide the sleeper top onto the frame. Screw the top onto the frame and then slide the sleeper mattress onto the platform.

    • 5

Caulk any holes in the back of the truck canopy with the waterproof caulk to make the new sleeping quarters watertight.
