RV Generator Won't Keep Running

The generator found in an RV is typically powered by gasoline or diesel. These generators provide a power source for stoves, refrigerators, TVs and lights when the rig is not attached to an outside electric source. If your RV generator is not running to its optimum, or stalls out when running, troubleshooting methods may get it back up and running.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all power items in the RV. Open the generator's fuel cap.

    • 2

Push the dipstick into the generator's gas tank; pull it out. If the stick is dry, the generator is out of fuel. If the dipstick shows very little fuel, the generator is stalling due to lack of fuel. Place the funnel into the generator's gas hose and pour in fuel from a gas can or container. Check your RV user-manual for the proper fuel.

Unscrew the spark plug from the generator using the socket and ratchet. Consult the user manual for the location of the spark plug on your particular model. Pull the spark plug up and out; inspect for oil or grease build-up. Clean out the spark plug chamber. Put the new spark plug into the chamber and replace the cap.

Tighten the tension on the generator's idle cable. Use the manual of your particular model to locate the idle cable. Pull the cable manually and unscrew the retaining bolt. Pull 1/4-inch of the cable to make it tighter. Tighten the retaining screw until the generator idles at a higher RPM.
