How to Troubleshoot an LP Gas Detector in an RV Trailer

Liquid propane (LP) detectors are a safety feature to have in your RV. Gas is heavier than air and drops to the ground, so these devices are located near the floor. They are--and should be--very sensitive, which can cause occasional problems. Before replacing the unit when it malfunctions, try troubleshooting the problem for a fraction of the cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Open all the windows and vents on a brand-new RV for a few days to air out the unit. The smell of the new coach may set off the detector.

    • 2

Change the battery on the smoke detector. Wireless smoke detectors will beep when the battery is dead and needs to be changed. You may be mistaking this sound for the LP detector.

    • 3

Use hairspray outside the coach. Hairspray contains butane which is a gas and will activate the gas detector.

    • 4

Check that the RV's battery is fully charged if the gas detector is on but there is no gas. A low battery can cause the detector to be overly sensitive.

    • 5

Check the levels of LP in the tank. Low gas can also trigger the gas detector.
