Problems With RV Electric Steps

Electric RV steps are a modern convenience that can be purchased as an option for your camper or RV. These steps extend and retract at the push of a button for easy access in and out of the door. They usually come with one to four steps, depending on your needs and the height of your vehicle. A handy gadget indeed, but not without its bugs.
  1. Steps Can Get Stuck

    • These steps can become stuck in the extended or retracted position, making it difficult to move. Regular oiling is the best defense against this particular issue; about every 30 days is recommended. If oiling does not work to free the steps, it could be a motor malfunction and will need to be seen by a professional. Taking it back to where you had the steps installed or to an RV repair shop are your best options.

    Electrical Problems

    • Electrical problems are very common with electric steps. Steps that are functioning properly can be extended and retracted at any time with the flip of a switch and can be set to automatically respond to the opening and closing of the door. A most common example is for the steps to stop responding to manual commands and only respond to the opening and closing of the door. This could have more than one root cause and needs to be fixed by a professional.

    Exposed Wiring

    • Due to the location and use of the steps, exposed wiring and corrosion could become an issue. Regular checks to make sure the wiring is properly tightened and secured can help avoid this problem. If it looks at though this issue has already begun, you will need to verify the condition of the wires and determine if any need to be replaced before securing them.
