Problems With a Hyosung SD50

The Hyosung "Sense" SD50 is a small, affordable scooter from the Korean manufacturer. Initially introduced in 2005, it has had a number of cosmetic modifications through the years. Though the idea of a vehicle like this is to be robust and dependable, the construction of the SD50 is not without its problems. If you are aware of them, however, you can prevent them interfering with the reliability of the scooter.
  1. Panels

    • The outer plastic panels are made from a thin plastic that can be brittle and inflexible, particularly at low temperatures. There is little you can do in terms of precautionary measures, because the panels come straight from Hyosung. There are no third-party manufacturers making higher-quality replacements. Be aware that the outer plastics are susceptible to damage, and avoid placing any direct pressure on them, because they do not flex as much as you would expect.

    Shock Adjustment

    • The SD50 has telescopic forks at the front that have a set compression and rebound rating that cannot be adjusted. The rear monoshock, however, is adjustable, and will come from the factory set up to support an average scooter user, namely, a small-framed person. Larger people may need to dial on some more preload to prevent the shock from sharply bottoming out when hitting a sharp object such as a pothole or speed bump.

    Front Brake Pads

    • According to a review on Powersports Network, the standard brake pads fitted to the SD50's front caliper wear very quickly, requiring replacement after only about 3000km. Replacing the pads with aftermarket equivalents will ensure that the SD50 maintains the same level of braking pressure during a much longer life. This will ensure the same predictable response each time you pull the lever.

    2-Stroke Engine

    • The 49cc, single-cylinder two-stroke found in the Sense is designed for low fuel consumption and long service intervals. You can aid this by using a dedicated two-stroke oil in the engine. Most two-strokes burn a small amount of oil with the fuel while running. This is normal and will not damage the engine. However, using an inappropriate oil will leave harmful deposits all through the fuel system, which will eventually build up and cause the failure of components.
