Dometic Propane-Powered Refrigerator Tips

Dometic Group manufactures propane-powered refrigerators for use in RVs, and smaller cooler-style models for other portable applications.

All Dometic propane refrigerators have three basic needs for efficient operation: level placement, ventilation, and heat for the burner. Following these basic tips on placement, operation, use, maintenance and safety will keep the refrigerator running cold and problem-free.
  1. Placement

    • Propane refrigerators must sit on a level surface in order to operate properly. Make sure the RV is level or, if using a portable unit, place it on a flat, level surface.

Keep the refrigerator out of direct sunlight, away from other heat sources like stoves, and away from any combustible materials.

Make sure there is clearance around the back or vent for proper ventilation.

    Operation

    • Many of Dometic's refrigerators have the ability to operate on two or three power sources: electricity, 12-volt battery power and propane. However, you can only use one of these power sources at a time.

Do not use propane to power the refrigerator while moving. Do not use the 12-volt battery while parked, or the battery may run down. Also, use propane only; do not use any other type of gas or fuel.

If the refrigerator has been sitting for a long time, you may need to purge excess gas from the lines. Most Dometic refrigerators installed in RVs do this automatically when turned on. Otherwise, as with portable units, you may have to manually purge the propane. First, turn off the gas and remove other power sources. Then, turn the refrigerator upside down and leave it for several minutes before attempting to start it.

    Use

    • Before stocking the refrigerator, allow several hours for it to cool if it has been out of use for a while. Dometic suggests 12 hours for best results. Note that it will take longer to cool in high temperatures.

Make sure food is cool and well packaged before putting it in the refrigerator. Do not overfill with food, as air needs to circulate on the inside to stay cool. Keep the door closed as much as possible, and be sure to lock it securely before travel.

    Maintenance

    • Simple maintenance will keep your refrigerator in good working condition. Regularly defrost and clean the refrigerator and freezer. Leave the door or doors open when not using for long periods.

During cold weather, leaves and snow can block the outside vent. Keep the vent clean and clear of debris, and install a winter cover to keep the cold out.

Finally, have the refrigerator serviced at least once a year. Dometic recommends service every six months for the propane burner.

    Safety

    • Propane is highly flammable, so always follow all warnings and cautionary statements on the refrigerator, manuals and propane tank. Don't attempt to work on propane equipment or appliances yourself.

If at any time you smell gas, leave the area immediately and contact a qualified propane technician or RV repairman. Always keep open flames, heat sources and combustible materials away from propane tanks and appliances.
