To keep the water pipes in your trailer from freezing and breaking, the water system must be winterized with compressed air or antifreeze. Using compressed air requires an air compressor and adapters to attach the compressor hose to the trailer. Drain the water tanks and pump air into the pipes to drive out any excess water. When using antifreeze, drain the water compartment and fill it with RV antifreeze. Pump the antifreeze through the pipes until it comes from each outlet.
Inflate the tires to the recommended pressure for cold weather and cover them to protect them from the sun. To prevent flat spots, move the trailer a few times over the storage period or remove the tires from the trailer.
Remove the batteries from the trailer and store them in a place where they will not freeze. The batteries will lose their charge over time, so check them monthly and charge them if their charge falls below 80 percent. Clean the battery contacts with baking soda and water, if needed.
Awning fabric often becomes wet during use. Make sure the fabric is dry and clean before rolling it up and storing it. This will prevent mold and mildew from growing on the fabric and breaking it down.
Turn off all appliances that run on gas and turn off the gas at the main supply valve. Cover all vents for gas-powered appliances to prevent insects from gathering and building nests.
To prevent insects or rodents from being drawn to the trailer, remove all perishable items. Also remove anything that could freeze--and explode.
Thoroughly clean the inside and the outside of the trailer. Clean the refrigerator and freezer and place a box of baking soda inside to absorb odors. Clean the air conditioner and cover.
Inspect the trailer for cracks or breaks in the exterior and windows. Check the undercarriage for areas where rodents could enter. Seal all openings completely.
Cover the trailer completely to protect the interior and exterior from sun damage. Use a trailer cover fabric that is breathable to inhibit the growth of mildew and mold. If you don't have a cover, close all the window blinds to protect the interior from sun damage.
