Transportation Options at the Athens International Airport

The Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport is Athens's state of the art international airport, which is located at Spata. The airport, which opened in 2001 and serves more than 15 million passengers every year, has good road and rail links with the city's important transportation hubs, and offers a number of transportation options for arriving visitors. You'll find a regular bus service, a metro train, taxis and limousines to choose between.
  1. Rail

    • There is a suburban railway link that runs from the airport to the center of the city that has been extended to reach Pireas, Athens' port. The train ride from the airport all the way to Pireas takes 50 minutes; you can link to the three local Metro lines in the city. The airport is also served by Line 3 of the Metro system. The Metro system connects with Athens' central station, which has regular links throughout the country. The railway station is next to the airport and can be reached by an overhead walkway.

    Bus

    • There are four bus services that operate between the airport and the city. Buses arrive at the Departures level of the terminal and depart from the Arrivals level. Bus X93 connects with Kiffissou and Lliosson streets and leaves every 35 minutes. Bus X94 is an express bus service that connects the Ethniki Amina (Pentagon) Metro Station with the Airport. X95 is another express service from the airport to Syntagma Square opposite the Grande Bretagne Hotel. A fourth bus, X96, connects the airport with Pireas, where you can get ferryboat connections to the Greek islands.

    Air

    • Athens Airways is a privately owned domestic airline that operates daily scheduled flights to 14 domestic destinations on the mainland and the Greek islands. Air charters and air taxis are available for VIPs and executives. These flights are not constrained by flight schedules and can be pre-booked so as to be available on your arrival at Athens International. Aircraft types include a Colibri EC120 and AS-355 N Ecureuil helicopters, Citations and a Dassault Falcon 2000 EX.

    Taxis and Limos

    • Taxis are available for transport, and while they are more expensive than traveling by train or by bus, they are the obvious choice if you have several pieces of baggage, which can be quite unmanageable. There are also luxury airport transfer services that costs a little more but are worth considering if you are part of a group. Some of the larger hotels operate a free transfer service between the airport and their respective hotels.
