What was a catupult used for?

Catapults were ancient siege engines used in warfare to launch projectiles like large stones, heavy arrows, and other payloads over great distances to breach defenses, damage structures, and incapacitate enemy forces during sieges or open battles. They played a vital role in breaking through thick fortress walls, castle gates, and fortified positions. By hurling massive boulders or incendiary materials such as flaming logs or resin balls, catapults could weaken or destroy fortifications and cause significant damage to besieged settlements.
