Tunnels Connecting New York City to New Jersey

Two major vehicular tunnels cross the Hudson River:

1. Holland Tunnel (I-78) – Opened 1927. Connects Lower Manhattan (Canal St) to Jersey City (12th St). First mechanically ventilated underwater tunnel.
2. Lincoln Tunnel (NJ-495 / NY-495) – Opened 1937 (center tube), 1945 & 1957 (north/south tubes). Connects Midtown Manhattan (39th St) to Weehawken, NJ. World’s busiest vehicular tunnel (~120k vehicles/day).

Both are operated by the Port Authority of NY & NJ. The George Washington Bridge (I-95/US-1/9) provides the third crossing upriver.
