How to Use a Eurorail Pass

When backpacking in Europe, there's no better way to travel than by train. There's no romance in taking cheap flights on inexpensive, no-frills airlines. Instead, enjoy views of the French countryside or quaint Dutch villages on the traditional backpacker's mode of transportation--the train. A Eurail pass takes the trouble out of purchasing tickets at each stop, and can save you money between destinations. Hop on or off when you like and explore all of Europe's nooks and crannies. There are a few varieties of Eurail passes, so make sure to choose the one that will best suit your needs.

Activate your Eurail Pass at a train station in one of the 25 participating Eurail countries. Activation must be completed before you begin travel with your pass. Find a ticket kiosk and present the railway official with your Eurail Pass and your passport. Groups of two to five people can purchase a Saver Pass. If traveling on a Saver Pass, all travelers' passports must be present at the time of activation. The railway official will fill in the first and last days of your travel period and stamp the activation box. Activation must be done within six months of the issuing date.

Find your train and board. Activated Eurail passes allow travel on most trains without reservations. Find the appropriate platform and train on the departures board, or ask a railway official to point you in the right direction. Board the train, find a seat and stow your luggage. Sit back and relax with your pass and passport handy. The conductor will will want to see them when he makes his rounds up and down the train. If you have a Flexi Pass or a Select Pass, fill in the date before the conductor approaches you.

Make sure you understand and keep track of travel days. According to Eurail, a travel day is defined as a 24-hour period, from midnight to midnight. You may take as many trains as you like within a travel day. A consecutive-day Pass allows for unlimited travel within the valid travel period. A Flexi Pass allows you to choose a specified amount of travel days within your travel period. For example, a five-day Flexi Pass allows you to choose five travel days within a two-month period.
