Train Trips in British Columbia, Canada

With the variety of landscapes that range from Pacific-coast beaches to snow-capped mountains, British Columbia offers visitors plenty to see. Train tours can be a convenient way to view the beautiful scenery away from the usual highway routes while providing amenities such as climate-controlled passenger cars and views through large picture windows. Several railway companies offer excursions ranging from scenic tours to special holiday-themed journeys.
  1. Kettle Valley Steam Railway

    • The Kettle Valley Steam Railway, based in Summerland, offers a 90-minute narrated rail tour on one of British Columbia's few remaining steam railways. The 1912 steam locomotive pulls an open-air Kettle and McCulloch passenger car as well as two 1950s passenger coaches on a 10-mile section of the original Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) that was built between 1910 and 1915. The tour includes a journey through the hillsides overlooking the Okanagan orchards and across the Trout Creek Bridge, the highest bridge built on the original KVR which spans the canyon at 238 feet. The train also provides special trips such as Easter, Mother's Day and Christmas trains and the Great Train Robbery, which is a re-enactment of the robbery by the Garnet Valley Gang. As of 2010, tickets prices range from $13 for children under 12 years of age to $21 for adults.

    Rocky Mountaineer Sea to Sky Climb

      The Rocky Mountaineer, based in Vancouver, provides a three-and-a-half-hour Sea to Sky Climb tour that travels from Vancouver to Whistler Village. The narrated journey departs from Vancouver and includes views of Howe Sound, the coastal mountain range, Cheakamus Canyon, Brandywine Falls, and an extinct volcano before arriving at the Whistler train station. Passengers receive a variety of amenities including assigned seating, breakfast, complimentary beverages and access to the Heritage Observation car. The two types of seating include the custom-built Whistler Dome Coach (a single-level car that provides 360-degree views) and the Classic, which offers extensive legroom and scenic views through large windows. As of 2010, the rail tour runs from May 20 to September 28 with round-trip prices ranging from $235 for Classic seating to $335 for the Whistler Dome Coach.

    Kamloops Heritage Railway

    • The Kamloops Heritage Railway, founded in 2002, provides a rail tour program on a Canadian National Railway (CNR) subdivision line. It offers the original Spirit of Kamloops tour and special-themed tours such as the Canada Day Fireworks Train, the Halloween Ghost Train, the Spirit of Christmas and the Iron Horse Mystery tour. The train is pulled by a 1912 locomotive, which is one of only 25 engines built by the Canadian Locomotive Company. The trademark one-hour-and-15-minute Spirit of Kamloops tour begins at the Kamloops station and travels north on the CNR subdivision line; it offers views of the city of Kamloops, Mt. Peter, Mt. Paul and culminates in a re-enactment of a train robbery by Bill Miner and his Gang of Outlaws. Passengers have a choice of seating in the 1930 passenger train or the custom-designed open-air car. As of 2010, rates range from $9.50 for children less than 11 years of age to $17 for adults.
