The California State Railroad Museum, located in Sacramento, and California State Parks operate excursion train rides aboard its steam-powered engine. Train rides operate weekends from April through September. The train departs from Old Sacramento's Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot and travels along the Sacramento Southern Railroad line. Passengers can ride in a standard coach car, an open-air car with bench seating or the first-class El Dorado observation/lounge car. The excursions are 40 minutes long, and take passengers on a 6-mile round-trip journey along the Sacramento River.

The Sacramento RiverTrain ride offers passengers dinner and entertainment aboard an historical-style train. The engine departs from Woodland, Calif., about 15 minutes south of Sacramento. The trip lasts about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours and journeys 32 miles. Passengers can choose the brunch trip, scenic lunch, sunset dinner, murder mystery or great train robbery excursion. Meals are served in the dining cars during brunch, dinner and murder mystery train rides. The open-air cars are popular during Sunday brunches and great train robberies. The club car often provides live entertainment.

The Amtrak station in Sacramento offers four train routes. The California Zephyr travels across the country daily between Chicago and Emeryville, California, (near San Fransisco) with stops that include Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, Reno and Sacramento. The Coast Starlight runs north and south between Seattle and Los Angeles, with stops that include Portland; Eugene, Oregon, Sacramento; Oakland and San Luis Obispo, California. The train features coach cars, sleeping cars and dining cars. The San Joaquin train route takes passengers between Sacramento and Bakersfield in southern California. It runs several times daily with stops that include Fresno and Stockton. The Capitol Corridor runs between Auburn, California, and San Jose. The train makes multiple daily trips and includes stops in Sacramento and Oakland. Capitol Corridor trains are equipped with bike racks for passengers who want to travel with their bikes.
